Welcome to December! It is such an exciting time of year. My kids are beyond ecstatic about the upcoming activities. Their elves have arrived, they have been making homemade Christmas ornaments with abuela, and creating their Christmas wish lists.
With fun comes much responsibility. We need to make sure that we provide the safest toys and activities for our children. December has been deemed “Safe Toys and Gifts Month” and for a great reason.
Seems like common sense but sometimes we need a refresher before we start Holiday shopping for our little ones. Below are a few pointers.
Inspect all toys before purchasing.
– Make sure they are not broken and that they don’t easily fall apart or pull apart. If it’s packaged, make sure you check it once it is opened.
– Make sure there are no sharp or pointy edges.
Avoid
– Toxic Crayons or Markers (there are “nontoxic alternatives”).
– Small parts or buttons that can be easily swallowed. This includes small magnets and batteries which could be dangerous if swallowed.
– Toys that shoot out or parts that fly off.
– Lead in Toys ” — be aware of recalls and older toys which can contain lead within the paint. Wash little ones hands after handling toys as well! If there is any concern of lead poisoning, notify your pediatricians immediately!
– Toys with ropes or cords (which can be a choking hazard).
When Holiday shopping. make sure you purchase age-appropriate toys. Most toys come with an age recommendation on the package. Check that the toys have passed safety inspections (ATSM).
We hope you and your families enjoy the Holiday Season!
