Glitter, the herpes of crafting but oh, so beautiful when graced with the light. Let’s face it, these ornaments drizzled in glitter are gorgeous but when you’re done decorating your tree, you look like you’ve been snorting a little too much fairy dust. There is a reason why there’s an entire revenge site called “Ship Your Enemies Glitter“. As an alternative to walking around looking like this guy from Glitter Fantasy (seriously, click it.) Here’s an ornament you can make that keeps all the glitter INSIDE of your ornament and out of your eyeballs, with zero reduced sparkle (or impaired vision).
You will only need five supplies, which you probably have in your home already! This is a toddler-friendly craft and a perfect family tradition. Just make sure the baby doesn’t run off with an open jar of glitter, which totally didn’t happen.
Supplies:
Clear Plastic Christmas Light Ornament
Vegetable Oil
Glitter
Ribbon or Twine
Paper
Step by step:
- Remove the metal top from your plastic ornament (I found my ornament at Wal-Mart in the craft section for $0.98. Target also has a 9-count pack of round ornaments for $6.00.)
- Fill the ornament a little over ¼ of the way with vegetable oil.
- Slowly spin the ornament to coat the inside with vegetable oil.
- Pour out any excess.
- Roll your paper into a funnel and place into the top of the ornament.
- Pour your choice of colored glitter into the funnel, filling the ornament just under halfway.
- Remove the paper funnel.
- Slowly spin the ornament to coat the inside with glitter.
- Pour out any excess.
- Secure the metal top back onto the ornament.
- Use ribbon or twine to hang it from the tree and tie a cute bow on the top of your ornament.
- OPTIONAL: Use a fine-tip Sharpie to add a date, a phrase, or a word on the outside of your ornament and make this a family Christmas tradition (this is the new pumpkin carving/cookie baking of Christmas time).
- Hang it on your tree and watch that baby sparkle.
Contained chaos, it’s what my life is all about. Send me all the pictures of you and your little one making these together, mess included! What are some of your favorite family Christmas traditions?

Super cute!
